Oceanic basin
The oceanic basin is land that is under the ocean. The oceanic Basin is as big as the ocean or water above it. It includes formations that are on the seafloor as well. This land form is formed when water has covered a lot of the earths crust. It can also be created by the seafloor spreading and movement of tectonic plated over long periods of time.
Oceanic plateau
Oceanic plateau is part of the seafloor that is higher than the rest of the seafloor (its flat and leveled). It is formed by volcanic activity that makes lava flow under the ocean. A small plateau may be about 12 miles long some are hundreds of miles. They are found on the seafloor and can also be found on a continental shelf.
Mid-Ocean Ridge
Mid-ocean ridge is an undersea mountain range with two tectonic plates on each side. It is made when magma swells and dries when the tectonic plates seperate. it is about 40,000 miles long. they are found under the oceans of the world.
Aseismic Ridge
Aseismic ridge are sea mounts under the ocean. they are formed by hot spots under earths crust. An aseismic ridge may be hundreds or thousands of miles. They are found under the ocean. aseismic ridges may be in different forms like mountains, guyots, or undersea plateaus. If it rises high enough it can create an island.
Guyot
A guyot is a volcanic mountain. It has a flat top and is 660 ft. in diameter and 3,000 ft. above seafloor. It is formed by volcanic activity. Guyots are found in deep ocean basins.
Reefs
A reef is a ridge of rocks or sand with coral debris near the surface of the water. A coral reef is formed when small amount of coral dies and is turned into calcium carbonate. New coral is made and sticks to the dead reef. Coral reefs are living and contain animals.
Estaury
An estaury is a body of freshwater that is attached to a body of saltwater in other words it is a mixture of fresh and salt water. Estauries are formed when freshwater and saltwater meet. the sizes of estauries vary.
